Job Description


The Los Gatos Library is seeking energetic and highly motivated individuals with excellent technical and interpersonal skills to join the Library as a Weekend Hourly/On-call Library Assistant. The Town's Library is a vibrant 30,000 square foot, two-story, LEED Gold facility that houses a children's area, teen's "tree house", technology lab, history room, periodical room with fireplace, and contemporary art installations.

The Weekend Library Assistant will join a team which prides itself on providing welcoming and efficient service to all library users in a fast-paced environment. The Weekend Library Assistant is a dynamic part of the customer service team, working on the children's reference desk and adult reference desk, as well as supporting administrative, technical and public programs and performing collection development tasks. The Los Gatos Library provides an array of interactive programs and is a progressive leader in e-books, open source and emerging technologies.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills, reference and reader's advisory skills; strong technical expertise with computer and library systems; strong graphic design, web and social media skills; and a strong detail-focus to provide administrative back-up.

This position is hourly with hours assigned on an as-needed basis, with a focus on weekend hours.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  1. Evaluates patron needs and assist patrons in locating information or materials
  2. Staffs information desks and teen room as well as roaming hours
  3. Provides reference and readers' advisory services in person, via telephone, via email and via instant message services
  4. Provides collection development for defined collection areas (including selection and weeding of materials)
  5. Provides project support as needed
  6. Provides technology assistance to patrons
  7. Consistently embraces Library Customer Service Values

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college; and
  • Equivalent of 1 year of full-time library experience
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work
  • Knowledge of basic cataloging and classification systems
  • Knowledge of basic Reference and Reader's Advisory techniques
  • Knowledge of Library Strategic Plan, Customer Service Values, and general positive customer service techniques
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Knowledge of common computer applications such as email and internet searching
  • Skills in listening attentively
  • Skills in communicating effectively with diverse community members and colleagues
  • Skills in applying observational techniques to recognize customers in need of assistance and respond proactively
  • Skills in applying problem-solving techniques to new situations
  • Skills in de-escalating difficult customer interactions
