JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision by the Fleet Operations Manager, performs mechanical work to repair and maintain City vehicles/equipment. Employees in this classification determine and perform mechanical work involving specialized equipment. Position is responsible for inspecting vehicles and equipment, diagnosing mechanical problems and making necessary repairs, performing preventative maintenance and automotive/mechanical repair work.Perform related work as required.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Comply with all written City policies and procedures.

2. Adhere to assigned work schedule outlined in City or department attendance policies and procedures.

3. Performs preventive maintenance and repair on City vehicles, equipment, and tools: identifies maintenance/repair priorities, taking into consideration factors such as safety and equipment down time; works to minimize repair and maintenance costs and length of down time; plans and schedules work to ensure equipment is ready for service.

4. Ensure compliance of repair and maintenance work with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures: ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees, vehicle drivers, and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

5. Inspects, tests, and diagnoses issues involving various systems/components of vehicles/equipment.

6. Conducts initial inspections of vehicle, equipment: interprets work requests to identify nature of reported problem and to assist in determining exact cause; inspects equipment following mechanical failure, breakdown, accident, or damage; conducts diagnostic testing of engines and systems to determine mechanical problems; consults with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assist in diagnosing problems, or to prevent future problems; assesses extent of damage, nature of necessary repairs, and economic feasibility of performing repairs.

7. Performs proper repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components.
8. Designs, engineers, and builds a variety of specialized storage and mounting components to obtain effective access, removal and storage of tools and equipment on vehicles/apparatus: installs add-on equipment for newly obtained vehicles/equipment; welds, fabricates, and/or assembles metal components, parts, brackets, storage systems, and/or equipment for City vehicles/equipment.

9. Performs routine servicing and preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include pumping fuel into vehicles, checking fluid levels and replacing fluids, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, rotating tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, performing tune-ups, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop, or emptying trash containers; properly disposes of petroleum and other regulated waste materials; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

10.Tests vehicles, equipment, and parts for proper operations; makes necessary adjustments.

11.Operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, testing, or driving City vehicles/equipment.

12.Drive to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor. Responds to emergency breakdowns or makes service calls to off-site locations after hours, weekends and on holidays as needed.

13.Researches repair requirements, preventive maintenance standards, and parts requirements for a variety of public works and public safety equipment.

14.Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, dealers, vendors/service providers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

15.Maintains an awareness of new parts, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession: reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintains and repairs fuel dispensary.

2.Recommend new/innovative equipment/tools for consideration of maintenance issues.

3. Assist with replacement and disposal of obsolete vehicles, apparatus, equipment, and tools.

4. Perform special projects or provides assistance to other employees as needed.

5. Attend workshops and trainings.

6. Perform other functions as required.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) years of experience in automotive repair and/or fleet maintenance operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position; and valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent certification or an ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Vocational and/or technical degree with a training emphasis in automotive or diesel technology preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Over two-thirds of on-the-job time is spent standing, reaching and using one's hands to touch, handle or feel objects.
Between one-thirds and two-thirds of on-the-job time are spent walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking and hearing.
Less than one-third of on-the-job time is spent sitting and tasting or smelling.
The ability to lift and / or exert force up to one hundred (100) pounds may be required one-third of on-the-job time.
This job requires special vision requirements including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
This job does require exposure to certain environmental conditions. Tasks may require working near moving mechanical parts over two-thirds of the time.
Tasks may require working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), extreme cold and extreme heat (non-weather), outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and contact with fumes or airborne particles between one to two-thirds of the time.
Less than one-third of the time, tasks may involve exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock.
