The Port is undergoing a transformation to electrification across its business lines to achieve Zero Emissions from operations. This includes extensive and innovative work in expanding, upgrading, and reimagining the Port’s electrical infrastructure systems and planning, designing, and implementing leading edge solutions such as on-site generation, energy storage systems, and unique chargers for everything from buses to ocean going container ships. Positions may support planning, design and delivery of the capital program, engineering maintenance of electrical systems, and/or tenant electrification projects. The current assignments are in the Engineering Project Design & Delivery units. Under general supervision, the Port Associate Engineer (Electrical/Mechanical Work), is expected to handle with competence any electrical engineering assignments. The employee uses initiative and creativity to solve electrical and mechanical problems. Performs related work as required. Incumbent may perform other related duties at the equivalent level.) Prepares designs, plans, specifications, estimates and reports for electrical and mechanical engineering projects. Makes electrical and mechanical engineering investigations. Inspects construction of electrical and mechanical systems. Reviews test reports of completed installations. Directs preparation and maintenance of permanent engineering and cost data records. Prepares correspondence and other material. Prepares project schedules. Performs related work as assigned. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE This position requires three years of professional experience in the field of electrical engineering and possession of a valid California certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in electrical engineering. A Master's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET (American Board of Engineering and Technology) accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES To perform the typical task and duties of the position successfully, the knowledge, skills and/or abilities listed below are required. Knowledge of: Electrical and mechanical principles and practices. The National Electric Code. The methods applied in inspections of materials used in electrical and mechanical engineering projects. The methods applied in testing of materials used in electrical and mechanical engineering projects. Principles of project management. Ability to: Supervise and direct support staff. Use computer aided drafting programs. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties and to work as a team. Work under deadlines and coordinate several concurrent assignments. Work with minimum supervision. THE SELECTION PROCESS Stage I: Application, PE Registration and Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Pass/Fail) - The first stage in the selection process will consist of an application, PE registration, and supplemental questionnaire appraisal review (pass/fail). Applications submitted without an attached PE registration and completed supplemental questionnaire will not be given further consideration. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement to the next stage. Only the most suitably qualified candidates will be invited to Stage II. Stage II: Assessment Examination (Weighted 100%) - The second stage of the selection process may consist of a combination of job-related situational project exercises and an oral panel interview designed to assess technical knowledge and any additional other KSAs. Job-related situational project exercises may consist of written exercises, performance exercises or other situational exercises that would assess the KSAs. The Assessment Examination is designed to test your overall aptitude for the position. Candidates must achieve a scale score of 70 or more on this examination to be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration . Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License at the time and for the duration of appointment. Incumbents in this classification may be assigned either to the Airport or Harbor work location. In order to comply with the security requirements of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for incumbents assigned to the airport and U.S. Customs for individuals who have unescorted access to secured areas of the harbor, each incumbent is required to successfully complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check, which will include a fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and a Security Threat Assessment (STA), prior to being considered for this position. The incumbent assigned to the airport may be required to complete and pass a U.S. Customs Airport Security Program Check (19CFR122.182).
