DEPARTMENTAL PROMOTIONAL JOB OPPORTUNITY
Restricted to permanent employees of the Department of Health Services who have successfully completed their initial probationary period. Unclassified employees who have attained permanent Countystatus on a classified by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service. Full-time employee in the unclassified service with at least six months of full-time experience in the unclassified service at the time of filing or by the last day of filing.
Schedules, assigns, trains, and reviews the work of a group of Laboratory Assistants on a single shift.
Essential Job Functions
Prepares work schedules for supervisor's approval to assure adequate coverage of all Laboratory Assistant workstations during regular laboratory operating hours, including equitable distribution of weekend and holiday work assignments.
Assigns Laboratory Assistants to work stations within laboratory on basis of actual workload, the number of employees available, their qualifications, the extent of their training in the procedures involved, and similar factors.
Trains Laboratory Assistants in the specific procedures established by the laboratory for the preparation of specimens for analysis by medical technologists or public health microbiologists, the making of media and reagents, logging patient specimen information into the computer, and the performance of other such laboratory tasks.
Observes the performance of Laboratory Assistants on assigned tasks both in training and on-the-job situations, and makes corrections necessary to assure maintenance of established quality and quantity standards.
Confers with medical, nursing, medical technologist or public health microbiologist personnel to investigate their complaints and resolve problems relating to Laboratory Assistant performance.
Develops recommendations for supervisory approval and implementation on such organizational changes as the distribution of tasks among Laboratory Assistant workstations, the frequency of rotation between stations, and other such matters based on analysis of changing workload patterns and other variables.
Assist Laboratory Supervisor or Point of Care (POCT) Coordinator to maintain POCT instruments, organize POCT documents, and file POCT documents.
May perform the duties of a Laboratory Assistant.
Six months' experience at the level of Laboratory Assistant* or its equivalent.
PHYSICALCLASS II -Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping ot squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*Experience at the level of Laboratory Assistant in the County of Los Angeles is defined as:
Assists laboratory personnel in the performance of standard laboratory tests on human and other specimens or assigns, trains, and reviews the work of a group of lower-level laboratory positions.
This examination will consist of two (2) parts:
Part I -An Evaluation of Experience based upon application information weighted 50%.
Part II- An Appraisal of Promotability which will evaluate Knowledge and Skills, Adaptability, Dependability,Productivity, and Personal and Public Relations weighted 50%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of this examination in order to be added to the eligible register for this examination.
Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
No person may compete in this exam more than once every twelve (12) months.
Appointees my be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies within the Department of Health Services.
