Position Description

Work in the Capital Projects and Roadway Structures Division of Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) as a leader in the Construction Management Unit working with a team of professionals whose vision is to be the most innovative and responsive transportation agency in the region. Reporting to the Construction Engineering Supervisor, the inspector will perform entry-level civil engineering work in the planning, design, inspection, construction, and contract administration of complex capital transportation projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Visit work sites to inspect, monitor, survey, or verify information for construction and civil engineering-related projects and facilities; keep notes, diaries, records, and drawings to document findings
  • Assist in design work
  • Research and verify data pertaining to maps and drawings
  • Interpret inspectors' notes, field checks, surveys, and existing records to assure that maps and drawings are accurate and reflect improvements
  • Perform contract administration activities including developing monthly progress reports, processing monthly and final payments to contractors, verifying final quantities and costs, compiling requisite documentation, drafting change orders, and auditing as-built records
  • May perform data entry, document control, and submittal tracking
  • Prepare preliminary and final construction estimates and specifications for construction projects
  • Prepare bid item lists and estimated quantities
  • Update construction cost data records; process, maintain, and update engineering and permit data and records used for a variety of engineering and construction activities
  • Ensure and enforce compliance with terms of permits authorizing construction projects and controlling use of public properties and facilities
  • Assist in preparation of plans and specifications
  • Inspect work performed by contractors to insure compliance with plans, specifications, and permit requirements
  • Perform constructability reviews;
  • Act as liaison between contractor, stakeholders, and other City departments and staff
  • Support departmental goals in promoting diversity, racial equity, and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :
  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.

Required Certifications/Licenses :
Current Washington State Driver license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Desired Qualifications :
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration or Policy, or Urban Planning
  • Construction, inspection, and/or contract administration experience on public works or maintenance projects in the areas of roads, asphalt and concrete paving, sidewalks, signal, street lighting, pipelaying, landscaping, and bridge work
  • Experience in design, construction, inspection or testing of traffic signal and electrical systems
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil and construction engineering, including methods, materials, equipment, and techniques used in civil engineering, construction, and inspection
  • Ability to develop, read, and interpret plans, specs, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents to ensure contract compliance
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently under strict timelines and constantly changing priorities and work assignments, while keeping supervisor informed of progress and issues
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational, time-management, and customer service skills
  • Construction experience with alternative methods of construction delivery
  • Strong proficiency in using MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, and Adobe Professional
  • Multilingual

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Schedule :
Most work will be performed in a normal City office environment; however, may be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays and in field assignments with exposure to all types of weather, traffic conditions, hazardous/toxic substances, and construction sites. May be required to lift over 50lbs and stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Overnight travel may be required.
