Position Information Join the dynamic Sonoma County Regional Parks Department as a Parks and Grounds Maintenance Worker! Multiple Extra-Help positions available. Working at locations across the County, Parks and Grounds Maintenance Workers maintain all County parks, bike trails, open space and other landscaped areas under contract with the County of Sonoma. Locations include: Spring Lake, Sonoma Valley, Central Area, Coastal (Bodega Bay, Gualala - Stillwater), and Russian River park areas. Work hours may vary, up to 40 hours per week, and may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Essential Job Functions (May include, but are not limited to, the following): Performs a variety of unskilled duties which may include, litter removal and custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing, checking heating and air conditioning, and maintaining and repairing parks buildings and furnishings. Irrigates, mows, weeds, trims and fertilizes lawns and landscaped areas; plants, waters and maintains various vegetation such as bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs and lawns; trims and prune bushes. Installs, inspects and repairs playground equipment, picnic tables, barbecues and other related parks/recreational equipment; refers to appropriate staff for further attention. Troubleshoots and makes minor electrical repairs to light fixtures, ballasts, outlets and related equipment. Plants, maintains and removes trees and shrubs. Prepares and maintains annual and perennial ground covers. Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of parks, including gang mowers, light tractors with attachments, dump trucks, front-end loaders, concrete saws, wood routing machines, air compressors, jack hammers and roto-hammers. Fertilizes and aerates turf areas; mows, trims and edges lawns and greens. Identifies and resolves or reports hazards. Maintains maintenance records. WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds is also required. Additionally, the incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, chemicals, biohazard materials and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work in confined spaces and work in heavy traffic conditions and inclement weather conditions, such as wet, heat and cold. Description TEMPORARY GROUNDS WORKER (CASUAL SEASONAL) (Class Code: 9129) Note: *Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30) . The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in temporary employment to assist in the maintenance of public parks and open space for up to 40 hours a week, between the months of April thru October. Essential Job Functions (May include, but are not limited to, the following): General cleaning of parks, including litter pick-up and emptying of garbage cans. Custodial care of parks buildings and restrooms. Operation of various power equipment including mowers, blowers and line-trimmers. Provide customer service for park users. Abate vandalism and hazard. Other routine maintenance assignments. WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires sitting, standing, walking, crouching, stooping, squatting, reaching, crawling, twisting and climbing in the performance of daily activities. The need to lift and carry tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds is also required. Incumbents work outdoors, in inclement weather, and the position may also require climbing. Minimum Qualifications Minimum age: 18 years old Education & Experience: The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way: A high school diploma or tested equivalent, AND Some experience in construction and/or maintenance laborer experience.
