Under general supervision, perform a variety of journey level maintenance, construction, installation and repair of City streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and pavement markings. Install street barricades, cones and direct traffic around worksites. Operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and power tools. Maintain hand tools, assigned equipment and vehicles. Rake and spread asphalt; seal cracks and patch streets; construct forms, lay concrete and finish concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks. Maintain and clear waterways. Maintain traffic control systems; install buttons and reflectors along streets and highways. Prepare, install, repair and replace City sign posts and signs. Respond to public inquires in a courteous manner. Respond to emergencies as needed. Note: Offers of employment may be made at the Streets Maintenance Worker I level.
Knowledge of: Installation, maintenance, and repair procedures for street maintenance; methods and techniques of concrete finishing and repair and asphalt work; general construction, maintenance and repairs of streets, sign anchors, sidewalks, gutters, stonework and small block walls; safe operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, tools and construction and street maintenance equipment. Modern office practices, including use of a personal computer and use of a computerized work order program.
Skill in: Asphalt road construction and maintenance including safely operating a variety of power equipment appropriate to assigned duties such as a backhoe, front end loader, skiploader, dump truck, rollers, grader, asphalt paver, concrete saw, jack hammer, compressor, paint sprayer and other assigned equipment. Performing maneuvers with a backhoe and skiploader; trenching and pipe laying.
Ability to: Safely perform heavy physical labor; perform inspections and troubleshoot complex construction and maintenance problems from written and oral instructions; assess a difficult situation and make recommendations and/or develop solutions; read and interpret basic maps, blueprints, diagrams, and equipment manuals; maintain inventory and arrange for supplies/equipment as necessary; properly plan and execute jobs; maintain work records; project a positive public image; respond to a variety of information inquiries and public complaints in a courteous manner; work cooperatively with coworkers; communicate effectively in oral and written form; and work independently with minimal supervision.
Experience: Two years of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance work highly desirable.
License Requirements: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. Must obtain a Class B Commercial driver's license within six months of appointment.
Physical Standards: Most positions in this class require frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds, and less frequently up to 50 pounds, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling; some positions require the ability to lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting up to 50 pounds and the ability to climb.
